About me

welcome note

Wan-Hai Tseng PhD, LCSW

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York City. For the past 19 years, I have helped adults and families of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds manage life challenges.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Miami, Fl, my passion for helping others came at an early age. I earned a Masters degree in Social Work at Florida International University and later a PhD in Social Welfare at the City University of New York Graduate Center. My clinical training was in adult psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center.

I specialize and enjoy working with adults who feel excluded in one way or another either at work, in their family, community, or society at large —immigrants, women, people of color, those with disabilities, LGBTQ+, etc. Even if you do not identify yourself in these ways, being treated as if you do not belong can impact how you view the world and how the world experiences you and this can consequently have an influence on your self-esteem, relationship with others, ability to communicate feelings and needs.

In my private practice, I assist adults with depression, anxiety, health problems, relationship issues, grief/loss, work stress, breakup, infertility, and parenting. My approach is warm, interactive and non-judgmental. I believe in collaborating with my clients to tailor a treatment plan to fit their unique needs. Depending on your goals in therapy, I generally incorporate a strength-based approach using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing techniques and/or psychodynamic approaches to help increase self-awareness, engage in problem solving skills and teach positive coping strategies.
